Rants & Reviews: Activated Charcoal Whitening Toothpaste (from Pro Teeth Whitening Co)
Updated: Apr 17, 2019
Firstly, some background on my long-term teeth woes.
I visited a dentist for the first time when I was 22 years old, Why I'd left it that long, heavens only knows. Anyway, despite my clearly cautious approach to professional dental work, my dentist was pleased with the overall condition of my pearly whites creams. She did, however, make note of how thin my teeth appeared to be after years of alternate Coco-Cola drink binges and vigorous tooth brushing. The enamel was slightly worn (accounting for the creamy colouring of my teeth) and there was thinning around the perimeter of the teeth, predisposing to problems with temperature sensitivity. When I asked if a high-grade dental whitening procedure was the answer the blunt retort was, 'If you want your teeth to crumble as you eat, sure'.
With a heavy heart, I resigned myself to a life of pearly creams and tried not to smile in pictures in case my luminescent teeth were captured in large print for all of eternity.
So imagine the look on my face when my path happened to cross with the powers that be at Pro Teeth Whitening Co. and they offered to send me a 100% naturally-derived activated charcoal teeth whitening product to trial that was not only vegan-friendly, but was also low abrasive and therefore SAFE ON ENAMEL. I'll tell you now, it was a look of unchecked glee.

How I Used It:
The directions on the toothpaste packaging encourage brushing teeth with a pea-sized amount of product twice daily.
I kept forgetting to brush with the paste both morning and evening on days 1 - 3 as I was conditioned to reach for my Arm and Hammer toothpaste. To aid consistency, I locked away my other toothpastes and mouthwashes in the bathroom cabinet and only used Pro Teeth Whitening Co.'s Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening toothpaste on days 4 - 14, brushing for 90 seconds - 2 minutes each time.
Teeth cleanliness 4+/5: I was shocked by how clean the activated charcoal toothpaste left my teeth and mouth overall. Honestly shocked. Appreciatively running my tongue over my teeth after each brushing become a daily ritual because the squeaky-clean feeling was awesome. On occasion I've used other toothpaste brands and have had to brush my teeth twice in order to get rid of stubborn food particles; this was not the case with the Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening toothpaste. I brushed for two minutes, spat out and that was it. Fresh, clean mouth.
On the subject of freshness, the mint flavour was pleasant and not too overpowering in my opinion. I'm a big fan of mint though so maybe that was my personal preference. My only quibble would be that the minty freshness did not seem to last more than a few hours. That's not to say that I felt my breath was any less fresh after a few hours but I stopped being able to taste the mint quite quickly.
Teeth whitening 4/5: For a product that is 100% naturally-derived, the Pro Teeth Whitening Co.'s Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening toothpaste packs a noticeable punch when it comes to teeth whitening. Now I should probably mention that my expectations were set quite low to the company's claims that the product will 'significantly whiten and brighten your smile'. In comparison, brands on the market like Crest with their professional teeth whitening strips cannot be beaten for proven results. With that said, a considerable number of users have complained of acute and long-standing teeth sensitivity following use of these teeth whiteners that often contain peroxide. With the Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening, this potentially life-altering side effect is void as the ingredients are 100% natural and safe for daily use.
As I explained above, days 1-3 were a little haphazard and I did not use the product consistently enough to feel that I am able to comment on that period. However, on day 5, I was abroad taking a naturally-lit selfie in the middle of the Austrian Alps and (gasp!) did not hate the colour of my teeth in the sunlight! I paid more attention to the colour change of my teeth from that point and would say they looked a shade or two lighter on day 5 and another shade lighter on days 10/11.
I feel that with continued use there may be potential to get them another shade lighter but realistically, the product has its limitations. I'm under no illusions that the Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening toothpaste will be able to achieve the same results as a product with peroxide.
Product consistency 5/5: Gentle but slightly gritty texture. Similar to the consistency of kinds of toothpaste containing bicarbonate of soda. I was very nervous about using the product for 14 days straight and became obsessed with examining my teeth in the mirror for the faintest sign of erosion or worsening lucency around the edges. Thankfully, this did not happen and I am now happily using the toothpaste in the AM (I use a traditional fluoride toothpaste in the PM as fluoride prevents dental decay).
I had my reservations about activated charcoal toothpastes before starting this teeth whitening process with Pro Teeth Whitening Co. but have to say, I'm a new convert. Having read a small number of negative reviews about activated charcoal tooth powders and pastes I just did not think there were going to be any real visible difference to my teeth. I'm glad to have been proved wrong, especially by a company that proudly stand by their promises to deliver high-quality natural products to their devoted customers. Next up, I want to try the premium dental whitening strips with activated charcoal!
